Behind the Walls. Sundholm Then and Now

Do you know the story of Copenhagen’s old institution for the destitute and socially marginalized? In the early 20th century, a self-sufficient facility - completely cut off from the outside world - was established behind a 16-meter-wide moat. Here, vulnerable citizens lived in strict isolation, subjected to a regime of control, routine, and discipline.

During Culture Night, you can experience the Sundholm of the past - as well as the Sundholm of today, which remains a home for vulnerable Copenhageners while simultaneously blossoming with new urban spaces, communities, art, and culture. Through theater, storytelling, exhibitions and Bybi’s magical honey factory, you will gain insight into a part of Copenhagen that you might not yet know.

“Tell the Bees” in Bybi’s magical honey temple

In the past, Europeans regarded bees as family. People would tell the bees about major events, believing they would bring good fortune and protection. For Culture Night, we are bringing back the tradition. You are invited to tell the bees about a person, a relationship, or a being that is important to you. As a reward, you will get a jar of honey
